FAQ: Living in the KHG halls of residence

  • I am enrolled at the university of Tübingen or want to study there in the near future. When can I apply for a room in the student residences?
    • The deadline for the winter semester is at the middle of June, for the summer semester it is in the beginning or middle of January before the semester in question. The exact date will be announced on our homepage.

Note to first-semester students: it is possible to apply for a room before you received your admission letter from the university. You have then to present the letter of admission when you move in.

  • How does the room allocation work?
    • In each residential home a small circle of people (house management, house spokesperson and 2-3 further representatives) look at the applications and make a pre-selection. For the Erasmushaus the candidates are invited for an interview to get to know them. In the CSH the representatives of each floor together with the house management make their selection based on the proposals of the small circle.
  • Can I live in the KHG halls of residence if I am not enrolled at the university?
    • The halls of residence are for students. Being enrolled is the prerequisite for a room. In the CSH , however, there can be made an exception under special circumstances. A decision in this case is made by the house management in consultation with the allocation committee.
  • How long can I rent the KHG halls of residence?
    • The tenancy agreements are normally concluded for one semester. They can be prolonged each semester until the maximum time period of tenancy is reached. In the Erasmushaus this is 6 semesters. In the CSH you can rent for a maximum of 8 semesters. Note: The periods of residence in the two halls of residence do not affect one another. If you have lived in the CSH (for a maximum of 8 semesters), you can rent a room in the Erasmushaus for a maximum of 6 semesters afterwards and vice versa (as long as you are enrolled).
  • I lived in a KHG hall of residence fore some semesters before I went away for an internship or a time abroad. Can I move back into the same hall of residence?
    • You can definitely apply again, earlier involvement in the house is hereby of advantage. The previous residential time will be counted towards the maximum period of residence.
  • My programme includes a phase of career preparation where I am not enrolled but is an integral part of my studies (e.g. PJ, PreMaster). Can I stay ath the house during that time ?
    • Being enrolled is the crucial criteria to live at a student hall of residence in principle. This can be waived in justified individual cases. The decision herein lies with the house management.
  • As a PhD student, can I get a room in the KHG halls of residence ?
    • At the Erasmushaus this is not possible. In the CSH it is only possible in exceptional cases: if you are enrolled but dot employed (e.g. as research assistant) or are sarting the doctorate while still in the regular period of residence, you can be admitted by the house management.
  • I am away during the semester break. Can I sublet my room?
    • Subletting your room in the CSH not possible due to the rental agreement. In the Erasmushaus you can sublet your room for a maximum of two months during the semester break. This must be done in consultation with the management and the other tenants on your floor.
  • On what dates can I move out according to the regulations after the tenancy agreement has expired?
    • The tenancy agreements are concluded for one semester i.e. they run from October 1st until March 31st in the winter semester or from April 1st to September 30th in the summer semester. Moving out happens in consultation with the house management. If the end of the rental period in the Erasmushaus falls on a Saturday, Sunday, public holiday or other non-working-day, the move-out has to take place on the last working day (Monday-Friday) of the preceding month.
  • Is is possible to rent a room for only 1-2 months?
    • No, the rental agreements are always concluded for a whole semester, so that it is not possibel to rent a room for 1-2 months.
  • Can I terminate my contract and move out during the semester?
    • Your contract is always binding for one semester. At the Erasmushaus it is therefor not possible to terminate your contract earlier. However, you can sublet your room for a maximum of two month during the semester break. At the CSH the contract is also binding for one semester, but it is possible to move out one month earlier than stated in the rental agreement.
  • I am enrolled at a different university / I have to complete a time abroad for my studies / I have terminated my studies and going in a different direction / I have completed my studies. Can I terminate my contract earlier?
    • Someone who is living in the CSH can be released a month earlier from their contract due to the reasons stated above. At the Erasmushaus you cannot terminate your contract earlier. However, you can sublet your room for a maximum of two month during the semester break.
  • Can I overwrite my contract to a new tenant?
    • No, new tenants can only be determined via the regular allocation process. It is not possible to determine a new tenant yourself.
  • Can I move from my room to a different, bigger room if one becomes available on my floor?
    • CSH: Yes. However, an expense allowance of 50€ is due to payment to the house mangement. If someone moves out of a larger room, the residents on the floor can agree among themselves who would like to move from a smaller to a larger room. A new tenant is then sought for the smaller room or the smaller room is reallocated at the next regular allocation. Rooms in the Erasmushaus are all the same size.
